Dr. J’s ETS 2023 paper available NOW

The week before thanksgiving, I was honored to deliver a paper on my cherished research subject, a long forgotten monk from the 5th century, Faustus the Bishop of Riez. Faustus’s anti-predestinarian work De Gratia was the catalyst for the Second Council of Orange in 529 A.D., and serves as the clearest expression of Gallic theology in the 5th century. The work is a robust defense of human freedom and yet also a robust defense of the grace of God.

In the paper I seek to correct some historical inaccuracies and misgivings about Faustus. I also think that we Protestants could benefit from thinking outside of our normal lenses on the relationship between nature, grace, free will, and divine sovereignty.
